Electric Vehicles

LUS welcomes the growing Electric Vehicle (EV) market. Over the last 5 years, Lafayette along with most metropolitan areas has seen exponential growth of a mix of electric and plug-in hybrid  vehicle models.

What is an Electric Vehicle?

An electric vehicle is any vehicle which derives all or part of their power from electricity stored in onboard battery units.  This designation includes all-electric vehicles (AEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

What are the types of EV chargers?

EV charging systems are defined by the power level supplied as well as the type of connection.

Level 1 utilizes a standard household 120V plug achieving 2 to 5 miles per hour of charge

Level 2 requires a 240V supply and can achieve 10 to 20 miles per hour of charge.

Fast Charging (Level 3 and above) is available to the public in a commercial environment and capable of delivering 60 to 80 miles of range in 20 minutes of charge.

How can I plan for the future ownership of an EV?

For new home construction or renovation consider future-proofing your home with the addition of a 50 amp, 240V outlet in your garage. If and when you do electrify your drive, you can add a charging station by choosing a plug-in model or installing a hardwired model utilizing the 240V outlet.
