In November 2002, the voters of Louisiana approved a constitutional amendment that eliminates state sales tax on electricity and water for residential service.

For residential electric and water service prior to July 1, 2003, the state sales tax rate was 2.0%. After July 1, 2003, the state sales tax rate on the sale of electricity and water for residential consumers was eliminated (0%). The Lafayette Parish and City of Lafayette sales tax rate on the sale of electricity and water for residential consumers is 0%.
