In its continuing effort to keep Lafayette’s resident-owned utility system up to date and more cost effective, Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) is making significant upgrades to its water and electric metering systems.
LUS has replaced all of its legacy mechanical and electronic electric and water meters at homes and businesses with advanced digital electric and water meters. The new meters provide more accurate meter readings for billing purposes and provide a platform which can help customers better manage their utility bill by providing them with timely information concerning their electric energy and water usage. This system will also reduce the length of electric outages and can provide customers with up-to-the-minute information concerning the status of power outages, for both occasional storms and hurricane events.
In addition to installing new meters, LUS will be deploying systems that help it better manage its utility system, thereby increasing reliability and reducing costs to serve customers.
Safeguarding customer utility usage information has remained a hallmark of LUS. The deployment of this system will continue that legacy, consistent with all federal, state and industry standards. Beyond standard meter reading and customer service activities, these new metering devices cannot be used for any other purpose without the permission of the customer.
